Design Rules
To have a successful 3D printable file, digital geometry must satisfy 3 criteria.
- The model must be “water-tight”.
This means that there are no holes in the shell of the model. - Normals must be unified.
In the digital world, any surface will have a front and a back face. This surface orientation is called a “normal”. If two adjacent surfaces have different normal directions, this file input may confuse the 3D printer. 95% of the time, this is automatically fixed by our mesh repair software upon uploading your file. - All components of the model must have thickness.
While some 3D printing materials are capable of higher resolution and greater detail than
others, trying to print geometry without any thickness will not work.
If you are having any trouble meeting these criteria, we can help! Make Mode offers design services for 3D printing to help get you started!
